DILI, STLNEWS.co – The Prime Minister (PM) of Portugal, Antonio Luis Santos da Costa, is scheduled to visit Timor Leste (TL) on July 25, 2023.
The certainty of the Portuguese PM’s visit was conveyed by the Portuguese Ambassador to Timor Leste, Manuela Bairos, to journalists after meeting PM Xanana Gusmao at the Dili Government Office on Monday (17/7/2023).
Ambassador Manuela Bairos said the purpose of meeting with PM Xanana was in addition to congratulating Xanana as the new head of government and conveying the planned visit of the PM of Portugal, Antonio Costa to TL.
It was said that the purpose of PM Antonio Costa’s visit to TL was to strengthen fraternal and friendly relations between TL and Portugal and bilateral relations between the two countries.
“Timor Leste and Portugal are two sister countries that are committed to continuing to enhance cooperation in various fields of development such as education, Portuguese language training, administration, socio-culture, support in the field of justice, and cooperation in the fields of defence and security,” Ambassador Manuela said.
The Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Costa, is a lawyer and the 119th Prime Minister of Portugal. He took office on November 26, 2015. Previously, he was Minister of Parliamentary Affairs from 1997 to 1999, then Minister of Justice of Portugal from 1999 to 2002.
He also served as Minister of State and Internal Administration from 2005 to 2007 and Mayor of Lisbon from 2007 to 2015. He was the PM of Portugal, originating from the Portuguese Socialist Party.
He was elected General Secretary of the Socialist Party (Portugal) in September 2014.
